SUPER YOUTH FEATURE

"...There is a mood to Merchant’s photographs that quietly conveys her unique approach to photographing the city. Her images are both knowing and inquisitive. The liminal status of expatriate life certainly informs her documentation of Seoul. Her work is at once local and familiar, as well as new, unexpected and fresh. Notably, there is nary a tourist destination in sight. Effectively stripping back the layers of Seoul, Merchant’s photographs reside in the artistic contours of Seoul’s cultural map where she was able to establish her own sense of
community and home while away from Canada.

Merchant’s urban portraits on
thank you, ok make the viewer long to travel to Korea and sip on tea and sketch naive doodles at Takeout Drawing, to wander through her favourite neighbourhood of Hongdae, to sift through trinkets at impromptu markets and to dance to K-Pop."

Here is a feature that the lovely Danica wrote about my photographs of Seoul for Super Youth Paper, a happy online magazine, which concerns itself with navigating the creative scenery in Asia (yes!!!). I'm thrilled to be a part of it and can't wait to see how the site grows. Thank you, Danica and Super Youth :)

FASTWÜRMS

Here are some cute kitty buttons I picked up at The Power Plant. They were custom made for the gallery's Adaptation group show, designed by FASTWÜRMS (read more about them here).

OH DEER

Another stowaway from Korea: a little deer that I picked up from O-Check Design.

YUMMY STUFF

Miniature birthday cupcakes from Yummy Stuff in Parkdale. The red velvet were too good.

PHILISTINE

Opened at the beginning of September by friends Aaron Doucet and Colleen Ramage, Philistine, located in Parkdale, houses an incredibly well curated selection of vintage and vintage inspired finds. They have an extensive boot collection and a great deal on blouses (which I took advantage of immediately). The best part? Philistine is right around the corner from my new home.

JULIANE EIRICH

So nice to visit South Korea through this lens. See more of Juliane Eirich's work here.

RAG TIME

I'm on the hunt for a new rug and these boucherouite beauties from Morocco are providing me with some very colourful inspiration.

MIGUEL MITLAG

His photographs present scenarios for leisure activities or for secret vices. These works present tableaus of places where one imagines subjects enjoying solitary rituals, assisted by objects, chairs, pillows, rugs, and carefully selected coloured objects
that distil an atmosphere of hedonism and perversion.

TTABLE

While unpacking (hellooo, Parkdale!) I came across two sweet little cards I bought from Korean design company T TABLE. With sayings like "I wanna get into your prism" and "I'll swim to you," these cards are perfect exemplars of why I will always adore Korean design.
